Drawing from two major surface water sources, South Staffordshire Water distributes water to more than 1.3 million residents and 35,000 business customers in the West Midlands and other areas of central England. The utility gets its water from Blithfield Reservoir in the north and Chelmarsh in the south, which together with 26 groundwater sites supply approximately 330 million liters per day. South Staffordshire Water also has water treatment facilities on the River Severn at Hampton Loade and at a treatment works near Lichfield. The company is the main subsidiary of holding company  South Staffordshire Plc.

The company is one of the UK's most efficient water utilities and charges one of the lowest bills in the country. In 2011 South Staffordshire Water's charges were 25% below the national average. It is steadily upgrading its aging infrastructure to reduce leaks and to keep up with a growing population.

A price rise lifted its regulated business and the company's overall revenues by 2% in 2011, despite a drop in nonregulated sales. South Staffordshire Water also reported a drop in operating profit for the year. However, an after-profit land asset sale more than offset the 5% drop in operating profit.

In 2012, despite drought conditions that forced southern and eastern utilities to impose bans on non-essential water use, South Staffordshire Water reported that it had adequate water supplies to avoid such drastic measures. (The company has not required a hosepipe ban in more than three decades.)

South Staffordshire Water was founded in 1853 by the Earl of Dudley to supply water to residents of Black County. In 2004 South Staffordshire Plc was acquired by an investment vehicle of First Islamic Investment Bank (now Arcapita Bank).
