About KIPP SoCal Public Schools
KIPP SoCal Public Schools is an independent nonprofit organization focused on cultivating a world where every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and for their communities. We operate 19 tuition-free, open-enrollment, high-performing charter public elementary and middle schools in Los Angeles, Compton, and San Diego., educating 8,300 students and supporing 4,300 alumni.
Our whole-child approach to learning not only focuses on rigorous academics, but also character development, enrichment, social-emotional learning, physical and mental heath, and the nurturing of one's purpose.
KIPP SoCal is part of the nationwide KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) network of 224 schools across the US and educating 100,000+ students in 20 states and Washington, D.C.
KIPP SoCal has received three Blue Ribbon Schools Awards and four California Distinguished Schools Awards. Enrollment is open to all students, regardless of zip code, income or ability.

Our curricula are designed to provide students a well-rounded education, with time dedicated to academics, the arts, enrichment, and physical education. KIPP SoCal's educators are committed to continually improving their teaching skills and to giving students the support and motivation they need to make it not only to, but through college.

The data suggest the rate is even lower for students in South, East, Southeast Los Angeles, and San Diego. -Preferred 2 years of classroom teaching experience in Title I Schools
-Possession of a valid Internship, Preliminary, CLEAR CA teaching credential, or certification from another state
-Classroom teaching videos and student achievement data
-Eligible to start at KIPP SoCal on July 25, 2019

Standing for All KIPPsters
While May is Mental Health Awareness month, KIPP SoCal invests in the social-emotional development and mental health of students all year round, including our LGBTQ+ students. We believe that all students can succeed if given the right opportunities and support.
This year, KIPP SoCal became the first charter public school to partner with the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s OUT for Safe Schools campaign, which encourages educators to publicly identify as supportive LGBTQ allies on campus by wearing a badge. The badges help to foster a more inclusive and celebratory environment, and are available to all KIPP SoCal team members including kindergarten teachers. According to school leader Dr. LeAnna Majors of KIPP Compton Community School, “it’s never too early for students to be comfortable trusting who they are. This is something that happens over time.”
In addition, the KIPP SoCal Support Services team provided professional development to all KIPP SoCal schools through a session called “Supporting Gender Expression and LGBTQ Youth in Our Schools,” created with support from the OUT for Safe Schools Program Coordinator.
According to the 2013 GLSEN School Climate Study, school personnel are the most critical in building communities where students feel safe, secure, and accepted. It takes seven supportive adults to counteract one incident of bullying amongst LGBTQ students. And the consequences of bullying affect the mental health of transgender people in a major way. In fact, 41% of transgender adults have attempted suicide, compared to only 1.6% of the general population.
KIPP SoCal's mental health program manager, Laura Flann, notes that the push for trauma-informed mental health and support services for LGBTQ students stems from “promoting equity by putting more resources and support in those particular populations who are most at-risk and disenfranchised.”
Philip Reyes, a KIPP SoCal resource specialist program teacher who attended the session, learned new ways to be inclusive in the classroom and believes that by educating elementary-aged students on gender identity and sexual orientation we will become a more successful, diverse, and inclusive society “where everyone is accepted regardless of their identity.” He also believes more schools should have KIPP SoCal's mentality of “inclusion toward everyone.”
There are multiple ways to be LGBTQ+ Allies:
-Stand up for an LGBTQ+ individual
-Speak out against hurtful language
-Use gender inclusive language, lessons, or resources
-Proactively work to ensure that school climate policies and practices are safe and inclusive for LGBTQ+ individuals
-Honor preferred name and pronouns (e.g., he/him, she/her, they/them)
-Do not “out” someone regarding their sexual orientation or identity
-Refrain from any judgment, blame, or suggestions that the person should not identify as transgender
-Show love
-Start teaching tolerance and acceptance in early education!
